ANSTO Summer '16 Post 4

I have neared completion of the first set of test specimens and began nanoindentation on helium implanted samples. Luckily it decided to rain a lot during the work week and left the weekend clear and sunny. Some friends from my fellowship program came to visit from Brisbane and Canberra, and we went out to eat in Spice Alley where there is all kinds of amazing east Asian food. On Saturday, I went on a famous coastal walk from Bondi Beach to Coogie. In the summer, this is a popular track for many tourists and even celebrities, but it was much less crowded since this is the Australian winter. I was even able to take a quick dip in the water at Tamarama. Sunday, I decided to take a long bus ride out to check out Olympic Park: the grounds of the 2000 Summer Olympics. There was a uniquely Australian take on commemorating the games with Aboriginal like totems, one of which included the torch. Outside of the aquatic center, there was a torpedo showcasing Ian Thorpe "The Thorpedo" and his 3 golds and 2 silvers in Sydney. In addition, they turned some of the park lands into a Brickpit frog and bird sanctuary. This site used to be mined for bricks for buildings in the early 20th century, so that's where its name originates.
